Internships: The Intermediate Step Between College and Business

We at SahlComm believe strongly in the power and necessity of the internship.

Not only does the student benefit by gaining valuable insight into the daily operations of a bustling communications and public relations firm, but the company benefits from pulling a fresh perspective onboard and maintain a current view of the public relations world from the next generation of up-and-coming professionals.

Bringing interns onto the team allows for both the employees and the interns to refine their skill sets. Employees benefit from reviewing the basics of their jobs in order to teach interns how to get started. They may even consider new and more efficient ways to do a job that has become a routine. Opening up the workplace to an outsider forces the employees to take a step back and look at the way things are run. This can be refreshing and allows them to make improvements in areas that may have previously gone unnoticed.

Additionally, by bringing in college interns, the company can stay up-to-date on the methods being taught in the classroom (which may differ from current news and trends reported in the media). Although most employees are no longer in school to hear about certain new developments in the industry, a door of communication is opened once interns enter the work environment; the different perspective provides information about changes that affect the industry or workplace that may otherwise be missed.

As we prepare to welcome summer interns to our team, we thought we’d take this opportunity to share some of our personal experiences with SahlComm internships.

Nearly every member of our team has participated in an internship in one form or another, so who could be better to speak about what is to be gained from this opportunity?
